TIGERS TIME

“TIGERS TIME”

Time for Individual Guidance for Everyone’s Reading Success

T
his school year all CMS teachers will be taking part in providing all CMS students reading instruction using a set of systems and strategies designed to enhance our school’s ability to educate all students.  The set of systems and strategies are a continuous cycle making up the Instructional Decision Making model (IDM).   Our goal is to increase student achievement in the area of reading for each CMS student.  We believe all students are a part of one proactive educational system where all students can learn.

The premise behind IDM is to build a framework to implement effective research based practices in the classroom along with matching resources with student needs.  With the assistance of AEA personnel and the IDM CMS Building Leadership team, CMS teachers received training using the Instructional Decision Making model during the 2008-2009 school year.

Included in our CMS schedule this year is “TIGERS TIME”.  Each grade level will incorporate “TIGERS TIME” into their schedule.  All CMS teachers will take part in providing reading instruction to a specific group of students.  By using multiple sources of individual student reading data, students have been grouped according to reading instruction that has the highest probability of promoting student success, in turn, raising student achievement in reading.  During the 30 minute, non-graded period of “TIGERS TIME” that occurs daily, all 6-8 students will move to a teacher who provides extra instruction to meet student need-remedial or enrichment.  Examples of target areas include: phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.   Teachers will meet frequently to reanalyze data to determine areas of focus and possible regrouping of students.

Not only will the set of systems and strategies making up the Instructional Decision Making model be used during “TIGERS TIME”, this framework will also be incorporated into all content area classrooms where reading skills are essential for student success.  To create consistency within the Carroll Community School district, the IDM Model framework is being implemented at both the Fairview and Adams buildings this year as well.
