Tigers suffer first setback to Carlisle

Class 3A fourth-rated Carroll suffered its first loss of the season on Monday night, falling 3-1 to Carlisle in Raccoon River Conference baseball.

Taylor Ostrich took the loss in 1 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on two hits with one walk and a strikeout. Michael Dirkx threw the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit with six walks and five strikeouts. Jace Christensen pitched 1 innings and had one strikeout.

Carlisle broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Jake Landon went 2 for 4 and Jesse Ayers 2 for 2 for the Tigers, now 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.

“Obviously we were disappointed with the outcome of the game, but we felt really good about our effort,” Carroll coach Dirk Troutman said. “Carlisle's pitcher was the best one we have seen so far and we were able to out-hit them and had him in trouble several times, we were just unable to get runners across the plate when we had him in trouble.

“Our pitchers did a fine job again giving up only three hits. We have been making some mistakes defensively that we paid for tonight. I was personally proud of the fact that our kids handled a tough loss with as much class as they have been handling some exciting wins.”
