Weather shortens Carroll invitational

Carroll High rallied to keep its win streak in tack Saturday in its only game during the Carroll Baseball Invitational.

Five games were played at Carroll Stadium on Saturday before inclement weather cancelled the tournament.

Carroll (8-0) stepped to the plate in the top of the fifth inning trailing Algona 6-0. The Tigers used two hit batters, two walks and three hits to close the gap to 6-5 and then won the game 7-6 with two runs in the sixth.

In the fifth, Carroll designated hitter Michael Hasuer was hit by a pitch before Taylor Ostrich and Cris Houlihan drew consecutive walks. Jake Landon then smacked a double to clear the bases. Jesse Ayers was hit by a pitch. Michael Dirkx reached on a fielder’s choice and scored when Brian Gossett’s two-out single knocked in both runs.

Ostrich led off the sixth with a single for the Tigers. Houlihan and Tyler Tuel both reached on errors. Ayers tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center to score Ostrich. Houlihan scored the game winner on a Gossett single.

Gossett finished 2 for 4.

Carroll scored seven runs on six hits and three Algona errors. They left seven runners stranded.

Jace Christensen pitched the final two innings for the win, allowing no runs and no hits. He fanned the final batter.

Carroll, who is off to its best start since opening the 1987 season 6-0, returns to the diamond tonight against Carlisle. The Tigers started 12-0 in 1976.
