World History Survey  I (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

Required of all students

Semester Course - 1 Credit

This course is a general survey of world history covering ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Middle Ages.  Lasting one semester, the course is intended to provide the students a general knowledge of the history, geography and events that have shaped the world.

World History Survey II (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

Required of all students

Semester Course - 1 Credit

This course is a continuation of World History Survey I.  It continues with the Renaissance and Revolutions leading the students up to current day world issues and events.  The students will be expected to have a general understanding of current world events.  Topics in this class vary according to current issues.  Supplemental material will be incorporated in order to examine current issues such as population, war, peacekeeping, hunger, or other materials of current concern.

American History Survey I  (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

Required of all students

Semester Course - 1 Credit

This course is a general survey of American history from the American Civil War through the Great Depression.  Topics such as Reconstruction, industrial growth, W.W.I will also be covered.  A review of American history prior to the Civil War will be incorporated as needed.  Students should have a general understanding of the Native Americans, the War of Independence, and American government.

American History Survey II (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

Semester Course - 1 Credit 

This course is a continuation of American History Survey I.  I continues with W.W. II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the space race and the Persian Gulf War.  We will take an in-depth look at major events as well as social and cultural changes.  The students will be expected to have a general understanding of current events.  Topics in this class vary according to current issues.  Supplemental material will be incorporated in order to examine current issues of concern.

Survey of American Government  (Grades 11, 12)

Required of all students

Semester Course - 1 Credit

This course will give the student the opportunity to explore in a general way all the facets of American government.  Included will be a study of national, state, and local levels of government.  The student will concentrate on how all levels of government are interrelated as he/she looks at our political system.  Additional topics will be covered as situations in government happen or change.

American National Government  - PLSC:111 (Grades 11, 12)

Semester Course – 1 Credit

A study of the American political system and how and why the citizenry relate to the government as they do.  Emphasis is placed upon the organization and functioning of the presidential, legislative and judicial subsystems.  Approximate cost of the textbook is $95.00.  This course meets Carroll High School's graduation requirement as well as collegiate requirements as a general education requirement.  Students will earn three college credits.

Topics in History (Grades 11, 12)

Semester Course - 1 Credit (repeatable)

This course is designed for students who are interested in looking at various topics in-depth about history.  These topics will vary from semester to semester.  A strong interest in history and the ability to work independently are necessary.

Principles of Sociology  (Grades 11, 12)

Semester Course - 1 Credit

Sociology is a semester course dealing with humankind and their culture.  The major emphasis is on culture, society, family, religion, education, status, and groups.  Concen­tration is made on how we fit into all of this as an individual.  The course also includes a 10-page paper on a social problem, of the student’s choosing, confronting us today.  This paper is a requirement to pass the course and is a major part of the student’s semester grade.  Sociology is recommended for all students, but especially for college bound students.

Principles & Practices of Economics  (Grades 11, 12)

Required of all students

Semester Course - 1 Credit

The economics course concentrates on giving students an understanding of the conditions that affect the citizens at work.  A study is made of the influences on the individual con­sumer and producer, and an interpretation of the factors that affect the business activities of the nation.  Thus an analysis of our nation's financial system, business organizations, and personal income and spending habits is made in an effort to improve the personal economic decisions of the citizens and give the students a better perspective of the nation's economic problems.  Upon completion of this course, you may have an opportunity to take an advanced placement examination.

Psychology – PSCH:101 (Grades 11, 12)

Semester Course - 1 Credit

A survey of psychology including theoretical experimental findings and applications from areas such as neurobiology, learning, memory, personality, social, abnormal, and therapy.

Western Civilizations (Grade 12)

Semester Course – 1 Credit 

Survey of political, economic, social, and intellectual developments from the 18th century to the present.  Enlightenment, revolutions and reactions, national unifications, national rivalries, world wars, and post-war developments.
