Math Ancient Civilization Research Project – 2006/07

In an effort to greatly advance your knowledge of the origins of mathematics, you will be doing research on an ancient civilizations contribution to mathematics. Use of the internet and math history books in the classroom will be helpful in finding information about your civilization. I also have some PowerPoint slide information on CD’s.

After completing your research you will develop a PowerPoint presentation on your findings. The presentation must include, but is not limited to the following:

-Title page with civilization, time period and your name

-Introduction

-Summary

-Timeline

-Famous people

-Number system used or developed

-Accomplishments

-Developments/Findings

-What did they study?

-Source page – minimum of 3 sources, and explain their usefulness

                        -Minimum of 8 slides

The civilizations that you will choose from are:

                        -Arabic                                    -Sumerians

In addition to completing the PowerPoint presentation each student will be responsible for completing 2 peer evaluations. You will be graded on the quality of your evaluations. These evaluations are intended to give feedback to the developer on their presentation and for you to become exposed to 2 other ancient civilizations. The grading rubric that will be used can be found on the following page. Use these for your peer evaluations. You will pick the civilization that you want to research on the 1st day of the project.

If you need assistance in making a PowerPoint presentation please feel free to ask me for help. You may use the laptops in my room to complete this assignment. Feel free to save things onto the computers, but I recommend saving to your documents folder on the network. Please save your completed PowerPoint onto my flash drive. Once all the presentations have been turned in, I will publish them onto the AccPreCalc web page for your viewing and evaluation.
