There are many traditions in Germany,
such as on Christmas Eve people believe that their rivers turn to wine,
animals speak to each others, church bells can be heard from the bottom
of the sea, mountains reveal gems, and trees blossom bear fruit. As you
know, its just a myth.
Germans celebrate so much that they start their celebrations on
December 6th, which would be St. Nicholas Day. Just like in the United
States they set their shoes out and in the morning there will be candy
and goodies in their shoes. If they were bad, in the morning instead of
having candy there would be twigs.
A tradition that we probably never heard of is that in Germany on
December 21st it is the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
They call that day, St. Thomas Day. Whoever wakes up the latest or goes
to work late is called the "Thomas Donkey". A little weird?, I
know.
In German fat stomach is pronounced dickbauch and is given to the
person who doesn't eat well on Christmas Eve. If the person doesn't
eat, that night they'll be haunted by demons during the night. Oh no!
